A Guide to Your Red House Wedding in Trinidad
Right in the heart of Port of Spain, which is the capital of Trinidad and Tobago, stands the gorgeous Red House. This is an iconic parliamentary building that has been completely refurbished in the last few years and is now open for civil weddings! Let’s dive into the process of saying "I do" at this historic venue and the steps to ensure your Red House Wedding is not only legally binding but also beautifully documented.
Steps for a Seamless Red House Wedding in Trinidad
Applying FOR MARRIAGE LICENSE - postING banns
To embark on your Red House wedding journey, you must start by posting banns at the District Revenue Office. This step involves publicly announcing your intention to marry and allows time for objections to be raised if necessary. Both the bride and groom need to apply with valid ID cards at their closest District Revenue Office or if you live within POS, at the Registrar General’s Department - it’s in Ministry of Finance Building in Port of Spain. You should apply on the same day or the same week as your partner and the cost is $10 TTD. You will need to provide divorce absolutes or death certificates of either party’s previous spouse if applicable. About a week after posting banns, once there are no objections you must return with your receipt & pay $10 TTD to collect your marriage license. It is valid for six months so you must get married during that period. Now it’s time for the ceremony!
Where one or both partners are non-residents of Trinidad & Tobago, you need to obtain a Special Marriage License.
Making an Appointment at the red house
Securing your preferred date at the Red House involves scheduling an appointment. With only ten guests permitted, including your photographer, it's crucial to plan accordingly. The Red House is filled with charm, which makes for the perfect backdrop for your special day, so be sure to book well in advance to secure your dream date! Dates book VERY quickly so don’t stick!
To get information on booking a Red House wedding, read all the info here and head to the Ministry of Legal Affairs Marriage Division to secure your wedding date. It’s best to visit in person at the Ministry with your license and ID to book an available date.
Returning to the Marriages Unit
One week before your wedding, revisit the Marriages Unit with the Registrar's Certificate, a list of attendees, and copies of all relevant IDs. This crucial step finalizes the legal aspects of your marriage and ensures a seamless process on the big day. At the Marriages Unit, you also have the opportunity to complete your marriage certificate application. The marriage fee stands at TTD $50, and the certificate fee at TTD $25. Don't forget to hold onto your receipt—it's your golden ticket to collecting your marriage certificate, which will be ready ten business days after the wedding!
