Carolyn and Matthew didn’t want a traditional engagement shoot. Instead, they were looking for something that felt more like them. Something more real and relaxed. As a result, we met up on Ariapita Avenue, one of the most vibrant nightlife spots in Trinidad, and turned their engagement session into what felt like a casual night out. The location choice instantly brought a more natural energy to the shoot. It helped them ease into the moment without worrying about posing or looking “perfect.”
To begin with, we started the evening at Toucan Restaurant and Bar, which gave us the perfect mix of moody lighting, good music, and cocktail vibes. Carolyn and Matthew laughed over drinks and chatted like it was any other date night. I used flash photography throughout the shoot, which gave the whole gallery a filmy, almost disposable-camera feel. The lighting added to the intimacy, highlighting candid glances, soft smiles, and the real connection between them.
Before the night fully set in, we stepped out onto the balcony and caught a soft pink sunset stretching across the sky. The view of Ariapita Avenue below added to the energy. It was already buzzing with life! Afterward, Carolyn and Matthew took a quiet moment to soak it in before heading back inside, where the music pulled them in again. After a couple of cocktails, they let loose and danced right there in the bar. As a result, these unplanned moments made the session feel effortless and true to who they are. Altogether, it felt less like a photo shoot and more like a night out with someone you love.
Choosing Ariapita Avenue for their shoot was such a good call. It brought out Carolyn and Matthew’s personalities in a way that traditional locations might not have. If the idea of standing stiffly in a field or a park doesn’t excite you, maybe something like this is more your style! Think about what you already love doing together. Whether it’s going out for cocktails, grabbing coffee, or even hitting the beach at sunset, and let that guide your session.
